Dear  Jasper High School parents, guardians, community:


Greetings from Jasper High School…Home of the Wildcats!!  We are already into the second half of the 1st grading period.  Teachers are upgrading gradebooks each Tuesday by 3:15PM.  Please do not hesitate to contact teachers or school staff if you have questions or concerns regarding your son or daughter.  Visit the school website for all staff email addresses (www.jhs.gjcs.k12.in.us).


We are holding office hours with the guidance department and administration again from 5-7PM on Monday.  Please feel free to make an appointment to come in and discuss your student’s educational program or any concerns you might have.  These will continue through mid-October.  (For an appointment, contact the school at 482-6050.)


This is Homecoming Week at JHS.  The student council will be hosting a number of spirit activities this week as we help the Wildcats to get ready for Princeton.  All of the dress up days are listed below.  Students will get spirit tickets for their participation, which will put them into prize drawings the Monday following the Homecoming Day.  Let’s catch that Wildcat spirit….not just in football this week, but in all of students’ activities.  We are the Wildcat family!!  Thanks to Mrs. Ferguson and our student council for organizing these activities.


For those of you who frequent Twitter, Jasper High School now has its own twitter site for school events and activity results.  This is a convenient way to keep up on activities and up-to-the minute schedules/results.  For example, we postponed the tennis match on Wednesday night due to weather.  We were able to get the information out quickly through twitter.  Our twitter site is @JasperWildcats.  You can access it through our school website (click on Twitter at the top of the home page) or through the web directly at www.twitter.com


Our school improvement plan and our school student handbook are both posted on the school website.  If you ever have a question about issues and need either document, simply go to the SCHOOL DOCUMENT section on the top bar of the homepage.  We will continue to add and update the website throughout the year.  Senior parents should make sure their students are constantly checking the scholarship and college portions of the GUIDANCE section.  There are deadlines for most of the scholarship opportunities, so please be aware of this information and the useful information that gain be gained on these sites.


Good luck to all of our participants in weekend activities, especially our girls golf Lady Wildcats as they take part in the IHSAA Sectional Golf Tournament at Municipal GC here in Jasper!

Today in homeroom all sophomores received a Test Taking Guide for the PSAT.


Be sure to check the guidance website frequently for scholarship opportunities/deadlines, college rep. schedules, and college preview days. This is the best resource for up-to-date information and new items are added daily.

 

Seniors should be checking specific financial aid, scholarship, and admission deadlines at the schools they are looking to attend.

 

We will have open office hours on Sept/19/11 from 5-7 pm. Call Mr. Jochum, Mr. Uebelhor, or Mr. Hacker for an appointment

 

LOOKING AHEAD….

 

VUJC college fair is scheduled for September 26. Juniors and Seniors will be receiving information in the mail from VUJC.

 

The PSAT will be given on October 12. All Sophomores and any junior that registered in the guidance office will  take the test.


Students intending to study nursing at VUJC need to be aware that there is a separate, extra piece of the application that must be tuned in on Oct. 3rd at the VUJC office.  These forms are available at the VUJC office of admission or in our guidance office.  VUJC does not accept them before that date, and traditionally their program fills on the first day.

SOFA will have its next meeting on Wednesday, Sept 21 at 7:30 am in the Intro Room (600). Bring t-shirt designs. Dues are due by Friday, the 23rd.

Just a friendly reminder that students ARE NOT ALLOWED to carry any kind of medication with them during the school day. If they need to take any medication please send in the original bottle with a note signed by a parent. If they need to take a medication on a daily basis throughout the year I will need the medication in the original bottle with a physicians note. The pharmacy is very good if you ask they will give you an extra empty bottle so that you can keep one at home and I can have one here at school. Inhalers can be carried with the student but the nurse must have a Dr.s note in her office saying they can carry it with them. Please DO NOT SEND Lortabs or other narcotic medication with your student to take here at school .The parent will need to bring these to the nurse themselves. In the registration packets most of you signed a permission slip for your student to take Tylenol ,Ibuprophen , Midol , or Tums—We started doing this about 5 years ago and it has  worked out great. If you didn’t sign this form already you can still sign up and have your student bring in the form to the nurse’s office.  If you have any questions please call or email me---- The illnesses have been alittle better this week. Everyone remember to cough or sneeze in your sleeve, get plenty of water, eat right and get plenty of rest—I know that all of us can do this with our busy lives. Enjoy this weekend and these fall temperatures.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 17TH / PAOLI CONTEST


We don’t always rehearse as long on Saturdays as we did last week or as we plan to do this Saturday. I decided to try it this way a couple of years ago, scheduling night contests the first three weeks rather than doing two in one day so that we could rehearse. This also makes it so we do not have to start so early. We will probably have a long Saturday practice next week also, but it will not have to start as early as most years because the Avon contest is at night. In any event, we will actually have a longer day overall next week (Avon) than last week or this week, since we have to travel farther and will get home late-it’s just that a huge chunk of that time will be spent on buses. I really haven’t heard grumblings about these rehearsals (although there probably have been some!!!!)

                                    ***All students are asked to stay for the meetings at the ends of contests.  Parents are welcome and encouraged to be there also.  After the meeting I will take the names of students riding home with their parents.  You must come up to me with your parental unit so I see you leave with them.  If you want to ride home with a friend’s parents you have to have a note from your parent when you come up to me after the meeting.  I do not want any notes before this time and I don’t want parents to call me during the week to give me such information (it doesn’t work that way because students change their minds, etc…)*****

This is just a reminder that this coming Monday, September 19th the Jasper HTC Kick Off Event will be taking place at Cabby O'Neil Gym.  The doors will open at 6:15 and the event starts at 6:30. Also, next Thursday, September 22nd will be our first Youth Pillar Committee meeting at 6:00 pm at VUJC in the New Classroom Building Conference Room.  I hope you can make it to both! Football Homecoming Practice will be Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 6:00 pm at the football field.

 

Court Members need to be at 5th Street School by 7:00 on Sept. 23 for pictures.  Homecoming will be at halftime.  Attire for girls is usually a sweater/skirt and for boys dress pants, dress shirt and a tie.

On Friday, September 23rd, the 5th Street Elementary PTO will hold its annual Chili Supper in conjunction with the JHS-Princeton Homecoming football game.  Stop in and have a bowl of chili, a hot dog, a dessert, and drink for $6 per meal.  The dinner will run from 4:30-7:30PM.
